BUYERS QUESTIONS
Are you thinking of purchasing several Dohne rams or ewes to improve you stock level. These are the types of questions asked when a potential buyer first rings
to discuss purchasing Dohne rams or ewes. I have found that the questions are always simular.
Q. What faults or down side are there to Dohne’s?
A. The only thing I have noticed that if the Dohne’s are worked by an over
zealous sheep dog the sheep are able to jump fences very well. Apart from
that I have not found any other down side to producing Dohne sheep
Q. Do Dohne sheep need musing?
A. No they have a bear breach and do not require musing.
Q. What dose a Dohne look like?
A. They are a plain body sheep with no folds or horns.
Q. Can they survive in dry conditions?
A. The Dohne can survive in both dry or wet conditions.
Q. What is the temperate of the Dohne like?
A. They have a good temperate and are fairly docile.
Q. What is the lambing percentage?
A. The Dohne has a high fertility rate usually producing twins with the
occasional triplets. The lambs are small when they are born with rapid growth.
Q. Are the Dohne’s a self replacing flock?
A. Due to the high birth rate your flock will increase naturally.
Q. How does the Dohne wool compare with a cross breed or a Merino?
A. The wool is far better than a cross breed with microns that are comparable
with the Merino. My Wool Classer has stated that if he did not see the Dohne’s
being shorn he would think he was classing Merino wool. (Dohne Investments P/L
are now producing wool down to 14 microns see the wool testing results)
Q. What are the microns that I can expect to have?
A. The microns vary from 20 to 14.5. “The Chinese prefer to purchase the Dohne
wool as it is very strong and they can run their spinning machines at a faster rate.”
Q. How do Dohne compare to Merinos in all conditions?
A. They have a very strong survival rate.
Q. What price would you expect for prime lambs?
A. Prime lambs are low in fat so are preferred by the abators so the price is always the top.
Q. At what age would you join your ewes?
A. The ewes can be joined when their body weight is over 35kg.
